Rosa Parks was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement, whom the United States Congress called “the First Lady of Civil Rights” and “the Mother of the Freedom Movement.” By refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus in 1955, Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. Parks’ act of defiance and the Montgomery bus boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement and she became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation.
